Soccer Match Ends With Dead Player And Ref's Head On A Stake

How this story is JUST coming out, I'm not sure.

An amateur soccer match ended horribly on June 30.  The match took place in a poor state of Brazil and ended with one player getting stabbed to death and the referee being decapitated by angry fans, with his head being placed on a stake at midfield.

It started after the player was given a red card.  The player then attempted to either punch or kick the referee, who then retaliated by whipping out a knife and stabbing the player. (The player died of his stab wounds on his way to the hospital.)

Friends and family of the player rushed the pitch, overwhelming the ref, lynching him and stoning him to death before quartering his body and decapitating him, placing his head on a stake at midfield.

In an official statement from the police chief, “Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.” (NBC Sports)

The investigation is ongoing but Police apparently confirmed that an arrest has been made using videos of the lynching thanks to social media.

Before this, I would have considered a trip to the World Cup or 2016 Summer Olympics, both events in Brazil.  Now, I'm out.

I know that this incident should not speak for all of Brazil but I just can't wrap my head around it enough to give them the benefit of the doubt right now.  Hell, I don't want to leave my house as it is.  Brazil seems like a stretch.

As friend, and Washington Post writer, Clinton Yates, puts it:

Nail.  Head.  Yes.
