'Spin' names Dave Grohl greatest alternative drummer

Dave Grohl may be better known for his skills as a frontman these days, but "Spin" magazine is honoring him for his work behind the drum kit.  He's sitting at the top of the publication's new list of the 100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music.

They praise the Nirvana drummer - who has also provided rhythm for Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, and many others - for scoring a "victory for the unpolished."  "Spin" says Grohl's timing may not have been perfect and he isn't always one for nuance, but his "arms-overhead bashing" signaled the return of "emotion, feeling, and sweat" to rock drumming.

"Spin's" tally puts James Brown's stickmen Clyde Stubblefield and John "Jabo" Starks in the runner-up position, followed by the Police's Stewart Copeland at number three.

The rest of the top ten features Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, Missing Person's Terry Bozzio, Can's Jaki Liebezeit, the Meters' Zigaboo Modeliste, Steve Reid, the Roots' Questlove, and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith.
