Tampa police investigate violent home invasion

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Tampa police are investigating a violent home invasion that happened early Sunday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the 8200 block of N. Brooks Street Sunday morning at 5:15 a.m. in reference to "shots" heard in the area, according to police.

When officers arrived, police said they observed a male subject lying on the sidewalk on N. Brooks Street with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

During the investigation, police said they realized that another subject was also shot inside of a home on that street.

Police said according to the victims who were inside the residence, two masked subjects armed with handguns came into their home via an unlocked front door. The subjects ordered a female who had her four year old child with her in the living room, down to the floor, police said.

Hearing the commotion, police said a male subject emerged from a bedroom and tried to fight off the intruders. During the altercation, police said a dog inside the residence was let loose and attacked one of the intruders and shots were fired inside of the home.

Police said a female and a male subject were both transported to TGH where the female ultimately died from her injuries. Police said the male subject that was shot is in critical condition and is unresponsive at this time.
