St. Pete police investigate officer-involved shooting

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (970 WFLA)St. Petersburg police are investigating an officer involved shooting.

Police said it all started early Monday morning around 7 a.m. with a report of two stolen vehicles from a home on Tanglewood Drive N.E., one a silver, 2012 Ford F-150 and the other was a black 2004 GMC Envoy.

When a St. Petersburg police officer arrived to investigate the call, police said the owner of the vehicles told the officer that he was able to access the GPS system of the tablet that was located inside one of the stolen vehicles showing the trucks were in the area of 20th Avenue South and 11th Street South.

Police said an officer in the area saw several vehicles and individuals in the front yard of a duplex off 11th Street South and when he went over to the homes, the individuals in the front yard began running in various directions; some of the individuals ran away while at least two others got in the stolen 2004 GMC Envoy and drove out of the area, which was later found abandoned.

Police said at least one person got in the stolen F-150 and drove it toward the officer. Police said that officer then fired several rounds from his department issued sidearm that struck the F-150 and the driver.

The driver was taken to a local hospital and is currently listed in life-threatening condition, according to St. Petersburg Police.

Authorities said it appears that several  individuals were involved in stealing cars overnight and that these individuals were all meeting at the duplexes on 11th Street South.

Police said the information is preliminary and criminal and administrative investigations are still on-going at this time.
