SARASOTA (970 WFLA) -- A Sarasota woman is accused of cutting into a patient's face at a medical practice. The problem is, she's not a surgeon.
Sarasota deputies say that's what 44-year-old Christine Patterson did to a patient, at her brother Dr. Alberico Sessa's cosmetic surgery practice two years ago. The patient went in for a post-operative check after a face lift, but Sessa wasn't in the office. Instead, Patterson unwrapped the bandages, took a look at the woman, and sent her on her way.
The next day, the woman woke up with a swollen face. Deputies say she went back, and again Dr. Sessa was unavailable. Patterson reopened the wound to insert a drain, with no anesthesia. The victim says her pain was excruciating.
According to the arrest affidavit, a former employee of Sessa's practice says Patterson told her she had seen her brother perform the procedure "plenty" of times.
Patterson has no medical training. She worked in the office as a manager and biller. She's now charged with practicing medicine without a license, and is prohibited from contacting any of her brother's patients.
