PCSO Investigating Deputy-Involved Shooting

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (970 WFLA) -- A Pinellas County Sheriff's deputy has shot a person suspected of illegally dealing in firearms, according to the PCSO.

PCSO said the suspect is 32-year-old Anthony Antonio Newkirk of St. Petersburg. He is facing multiple charges and is in stable condition at a local hospital.

Around 8:30 p.m. Friday, PCSO said one of their deputies received information that a suspect was headed to the Suburban Lodge Motel in order to conduct the sale of firearms. Along with other law enforcement personnel, the PCSO said the deputy set up a surveillance around the motel in the Largo area of 6500 Ulmerton Road.

When the suspect arrived, the sheriff’s office said he backed his vehicle into a space near the rear of the motel's parking lot. The deputy then approached the driver and ordered him out of the car several times. The suspect didn't listen to the deputy's instructions and then began driving his vehicle forward. PCSO said the suspect then reached in his waistband as if to retrieve a weapon. Fearing for his safety and the safety of other law enforcement present, PCSO said the deputy shot the suspect several times. They later found multiple firearms in the suspect's posession, according to PCSO.

PCSO said the deputy is uninjured and will be placed on administrative leave as a routine measure.
