TAMPA, Fla (970 WFLA)- The commander of the 6th Air Mobility Wing, Colonel Scott DeThomas, talked to reporters this morning outside of MacDill Air Force Base.
He says 1500 civilian personnel at MacDill are being furloughed, and that's doubly-tough because those individuals have been dealing with the anxiety of furloughs since this past spring.
Col. DeThomas says they are gettting some help from local banks, aware of the situation, but social service programs at the base have been temporarily halted. Even the commissary is closed.
It's frustrating, says Colonel DeThomas and affects morale. But he assures that the furloughs won't impact base security or base operations.
