CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Customer tackles would-be robber; suspect charged

SARASOTA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Sarasota Police say a local man has been charged with one count armed robbery in connection to case where a witness took down a robbery suspect demanding pills at a pharmacy.

Police say they responded to the CVS at 2773 Fruitville Road in Sarasota Sunday, April 13 just after 1 p.m. in reference to an armed robbery.

Police say the suspect walked into the store with a bandanna over his face, threatened the clerk at the front of the store, then walked to the pharmacy in the back of the store, and demanded all of the Oxycodone and Hydromorphone pills, which are prescription drugs.

The suspect had his hand in his pocket and implied he had a gun, police say, and pharmacy staff placed the prescription drugs on the counter for the suspect. Police say the suspect demanded a bag and that’s when he was taken down by a witness that was inside the store at the time. Police say the man held the defendant down until officers arrived on scene where they discovered the suspect was not armed.

Police say 65-year-old Freddie F. Johnson, 65 has been charged with one count armed robbery in connection to this case. Police also say Johnson is facing one count of armed robbery in connection to the Hedges Pharmacy robbery that occurred on February 27, 2014.

Sarasota police say they applaud the actions of the witness in bringing this suspect into custody, but they do not encourage or recommend that members of the public take matters into their own hands when they observe a crime and instead recommend that individuals who observe criminal activity not put themselves into harm's way or place themselves into a position to become a victim. If you see a crime in progress to call 911 immediately and provide as much information to the responding police officers that they possibly can, police say.
